A Robe of Salvation

Dear Friend,

Walkers and runners are always out early around the Mission. At 6:45 one morning I saw two people pause in front of the crèche, pull out their cell phones, and take pictures. Good for them, I thought, and good for us. The crèche project was scaled back this year, but here was testimony that neighbors are still finding our Christmas message worthy of a photo and – who knows? - maybe a prayer.

And the lights along the portico provide a great backdrop. The wreaths and Christmas trees look terrific and I’m grateful that so many have contributed to the Mission to make that happen. Having the wreaths and trees dedicated to individuals “in memory of…” or “in honor of…” makes the project even more meaningful.

Several weeks ago a long-time parishioner told me that this year we really needed to make our spot on the hill look hopeful and alive. “We’re going to get through this!” he said, referring of course to the pandemic. “It’s Christmas and this is not the time to withdraw and be drab!” Not that there ever is such a time, but he was right. Point well taken.

Especially this Sunday of Guadate! Rejoice! In the words of Kimberly Hope Belcher, “As we become aware of what the world is not, of what the world ought to be, we begin to rejoice in our knowledge of God: ‘The one who calls you is faithful and he will also accomplish it.’”

Yes, and he will accomplish something through us - even in these strange and dangerous days. In the words of Isaiah, he clothes us with “a robe of salvation.” Let me dare to add that if that “robe” features a crèche, some greens, and a few strings of twinkly lights…all the better!

Gratefully,

Fr. Dan ofm, Pastor
