Franciscanism and the Spirituality of Biblical Flourishing
Guest Speaker: Fr. Garrett Galvin OFM, President of the Franciscan School of Theology
In commemoration of our parish’s 100th anniversary, join us in Bonaventure Hall at the Old Mission for our Speaker Series, which resumes on Sunday, January 26 with guest speaker Fr. Garrett Galvin, OFM, President of the Franciscan School of Theology.
In Psalm 92:13 the word “flourish” is used literally to describe a tree that bears fruit. In this presentation, Fr. Garrett will lead us through the Bible to consider what flourishing looks like and how the writers of the Old Testament see lives that manifest goodness, blessedness and order as bearing fruit and flourishing. Contingency can often determine whether one is happy or not, but the Bible shows us that we can flourish and experience joy in good times and bad times. Flourishing does not necessarily lead to happiness but to joy as deep, sustaining, and enduring satisfaction.

Parish Advent Retreat
Walk with Mary this Advent! All parishioners are invited to join us in Bonaventure Hall for our annual Advent Retreat. As Mary the Mother of Jesus gives flesh to her Son, she invites us to attend to the action of the Holy Spirit within us and around us. St. Francis of Assisi puts it this way: We are Mothers to Him when we carry Him in our hearts and we give birth to Him through the working of His grace in us which should shine forth as an example to others. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the city itself belong to Mary under dozens of titles: Queen of Angels, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of Refuge, Immaculate Conception, the Assumption, and under a host of other images and names.
Our Retreat will be led by Fr. Dan Lackie and will feature prayer, reflection, and a special display of images of Mary gathered from throughout the Archdiocese by scholar (and parishioner!) Wendy Wright. In her book The Lady of the Angels and Her City, Wendy tells the story of her pilgrimage and witnesses to the power of devotion to Mary in the lives of those she interviews. As a gift to the parish, Liturgical Press is offering the book at a discount. For more information about the book or to register for the retreat, click below!

Second Sunday Speaker Series —Fr. Jack Clark Robinson
Join us on Sunday, November 10 at 12:15 p.m. in Bonaventure Hall for our Second Sunday Speaker Series, featuring guest speaker Fr. Jack Clark Robinson, OFM, Director of the Santa Bárbara Mission Archive-Library.
St. Francis showed us, “If you wish to be heard, first you must listen.” For more than 80 years this has been the model for how Franciscans share the Gospel — including the California Missions and missionary work throughout Franciscan history. This is still at the heart of what Franciscans are called to do and share with others. Join Fr. Jack as we reflect on how we can do this today as individuals and a community.

Second Sunday Speaker Series —St. Clare: The Biblical Roots of Her Spirituality
Join us in Bonaventure Hall at the Old Mission for our Second Sunday Speaker Series, which resumes on Sunday, September 8 with guest speaker Fr. Garrett Galvin, OFM, President of the Franciscan School of Theology.
St. Clare always provided her daughters with the food of the Word of God. She demonstrates that you can only give what you have received and takes a large portion of this food for herself. While St. Francis grounded himself in Scripture, it is equally evident that St. Clare was motivated by Scripture and contributes to the Franciscan vision through an attraction to a different set of scriptural readings. This serves to round out our Franciscan approach to Sacred Scripture.
