Humble Servants
Dear Friend,
The Gospel we hear this week is clear: our identity as disciples of Jesus Christ is rooted in a call to serve, that is, to be that humble servant, willing to offer our lives for the sake of others. What I’ve grown to understand in my own life is that this means growing in my appreciation of God’s love for me and for the gifts he has given me to share. God does not call me to be a doormat. Our discipleship, like every great truth in our lives, requires growth in understanding and in practice.
Having good examples is key and as I think of the Parish Picnic and all the volunteers who pitched in to make the occasion so very lively and meaningful, my heart swells with gratitude and inspiration. Kerry Parker humbly (and courageously!) offered her service while holding out a very big vision for our community gathering! Thank you, Kerry, for heading up the picnic! And thanks to all of you who volunteered in large and small ways with your hearts and hands. (Right down to the clean up crew!)
We carry our joys and sorrows as a community. As we gather for liturgy this weekend, let’s “lift up our hearts” in gratitude for how God is working through all the humble servants here at St. Barbara Parish!
Gratefully,
Father Dan ofm, Pastor
