The Providence of Mary
Dear Friend,
Some 35 years ago, in my theology studies, I was assigned to report on an essay which, as it turned out, made a lasting impression on my mind and heart. At the time, I was attempting to bring both – mind and heart - more fully into my discernment as a Franciscan. The words I read beautifully wove together human experience and solid scholarly research and confirmed for me that my endeavor was not only worthwhile but one that fired my deepest passion. Figuring prominently in the essay was Saint Mary, the Blessed Mother, as the one – perhaps THE one – who can open for disciples a path to the Master brought to birth in her own flesh, Jesus Christ. It was a turning point for me, and I knew I’d found a faith-filled writer I could trust.
Imagine my surprise three decades later when, out of the blue, the author of this essay introduced herself to me after Mass one Sunday on the front steps of the Mission. I’d been Pastor for two weeks. As her husband also extended his hand, she explained that they had recently relocated to Santa Barbara and were looking to join a parish. “Wait, wait,” I said (stammered?) “Wendy Wright?” She nodded. “I read your work in theology school… and…please join this parish!” Looking back, I see a very comical scene, but let me say it loud and clear, it was also providential!
Since then, I’ve learned so much more of Wendy’s work – and Roger’s too! - including the story of Wendy’s Marian pilgrimage through Los Angeles, her hometown. The fruit of this remarkable journey will be on full display in our Parish Advent retreat. Our chosen leader, Sister Mary Beth, has had to cancel, so I’ll be leading it. Providential? I hope so! Please come!
Gratefully,
Father Dan, Pastor
